The specimen, housed at P, was identified as Carex lupulina and passed under the radar. The achenes are unambiguously those of C. gigantea.
This locality is the northermost occurence currently known for Carex gigantea in eastern North America. This is also the first record of C. gigantea for the state. The locality being so far from the southern border of the state raises some doubts about its accuracy, but the shores of the Delaware River were probably suitable for the species at the time of the collection. This area is now heavily urbanized and the species is probably extinct from Pennsylvania. -Étienne Lacroix-Carignan, 2025
