Description Rhizomes short, with shoots often forming large tufts; roots red-brown, often stained black, and scales dark grey-brown, becoming ± fibrous. Stems 5–40 cm, rigid, bluntly trigonous, sometimes arcuate and tough. Leaves 5–35 cm × 2–3 mm, rigid, thick, ± keeled, deeply channelled and often inrolled, gradually tapering to a blunt apex, grey-green or glaucous, turning red-brown then grey when dying, overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths orange-brown, occasionally red-tinged, darkening and often blackish and fibrous in decay, with a narrow hyaline inner face and concave apex; ligule 2 mm, rounded and slightly tubular. The inflorescence is 1/3–1/2 the length of the stem, with leaf-like bracts usually reflexed and far exceeding the inflorescence. Male spike usually solitary, rarely 2–3, 5–25 mm, with male glumes 3–4 mm, obovate-elliptic, red-brown with a paler midrib, apex obtuse. Female spikes 2–4, contiguous or with the lowest sometimes distant, 5–20 mm, subglobose to cylindric; peduncles ensheathed, the lowest ± exserted; female glumes 1.5–2 mm, broadly ovate, red-brown with a pale, often green midrib and ± hyaline margins, apex mucronate. Utricles 3–4 mm, ovoid or ellipsoid, grey-green or brownish with purplish blotches, weakly ribbed; beak 0.5–0.75 mm, smooth, notched; stigmas 3; nut broadly ovoid, trigonous. [details]

Description Densamente cespitosa, con rizoma endeble. 2n = 60. [details]

Description Densely tufted, with a slender rhizome. Fertile stems (6)15–65(80) cm, trigonous, with blunt angles. Leaves 0.5–2 mm wide, but up to 4 mm wide when flat, longer than the stems, generally smooth, rolled or canaliculate, very rarely flat, ± rigid, green or somewhat glaucous; ligule up to 2 mm, its width sometimes exceeding that of the blade, with rounded apex and free margins frequently tinged red; without contraligule; basal sheaths light or dark brown, entire, very rarely somewhat fibrous. Lowest bract similar to the leaves, much longer than the inflorescence. Male spike solitary, (6)6–20(26) × 1–3(4) mm, shortly cylindrical or fusiform; female spikes 3–5, 6–20(27) × 3–5.5(7) mm, ovoid, close to the male spike, though sometimes the lowest one separated, erect. Male glumes oval or oblong, with variable apex and light or dark brown color; female glumes ± oval, generally acute, sometimes shortly mucronate, light or dark brown. Utricles 3–3.6 × 1.1–1.5 mm, oval in outline, suberect (rarely erect-patent or almost patent), plurinerved, dull, attenuate into a beak 0.5–0.6 mm, shortly bidentate, smooth. Achenes 1.9–2.5 × 1–1.3 mm, elliptic in outline, trigonous. 2n = 60. [details]
