Description Rhizomes short; shoots densely tufted; roots brown; scales brown with black veins, soon becoming fibrous. Stems 10–85 cm (–160 cm when in fruit), often rigid but rarely as much as 1 mm in diameter just below inflorescence, pentagonal to bluntly trigonous. Leaves 7–45 cm × 2–4 mm, keeled, gradually or sometimes abruptly tapering to a flat tip, mid green, often bronzing on dying; hypostomous; sheaths forming a short false stem; apex straight or concave; ligule 2–3.5 mm, ovate. Inflorescence 1–4.5 cm × 7–9(–10) mm, unbranched, stiffly erect; bracts glumaceous, with a setaceous point. Spikes 3–8, contiguous or crowded, 5–10 mm, ovoid, sessile, male at top, female below, the proximal/subproximal spikes frequently compound, consisting of 2–6 digitately disposed spikelets often entirely female. Male glumes 3–4 mm, lanceolate-elliptic, hyaline or pale brown; midrib green; apex acute. Female glumes 3–4.5 mm, ovate, pale or golden-brown, fading to white as the fruits mature; apex acute or apiculate. Utricles 3–4.5 mm, usually more than twice as long as wide, ovoid with broad base or ovoid-ellipsoid, widely divaricate, giving the spikes a star-like appearance, yellow-green, becoming dark brown and shiny on maturity with short veins near base, tapering ± evenly into a minutely toothed beak c. 0.75 mm long; stigmas 2; nut orbicular-compressed.
