Description Rhizomes short; shoots in ± dense tufts 10–20 cm across; roots thick, grey brown; scales dark brown with black veins, soon becoming fibrous. Stems 25–90 cm, robust, trigonous. Leaves up to 75 cm × 3–5 mm, shorter than flowering stem, flat or channelled, gradually tapered to a fine, flat apex, usually bright yellow-green till late in the season (although darker in shade), stiff; hypostomous; sheaths forming false stems in sterile shoots, lower pale brown, ribbed; inner face hyaline; apex straight or ± concave; ligule 2 mm or less, obtuse or truncate, often yellow. (The blade of the leaf is at this point so closely appressed to the stem that when pulled it parts from it with a snap.) Inflorescence 4–6 cm; lower bracts 2–3 cm, sometimes longer, setaceous, upper glumaceous. Spikes 4–8, the upper contiguous, 5–10 mm, all female, the lower up to 2 cm distant from each other, sometimes branched, 5–15 mm, male at top and female below. Male glumes 3.5–5 mm, lanceolate, brownish hyaline; midrib green; apex acute. Female glumes 4–4.5 mm, ovate-elliptic, golden-yellow or light brown; midrib often green; apex acute to attenuate. Utricles 4–4.5(–4.8) mm, markedly divaricate, ovoid, tapered above and below, faintly nerved at base, shiny, yellowish, soon becoming dark red brown; beak c. 1 mm, rough, split; stigmas 2; nut obovoid, biconvex.
