Description Rhizome short, with ± densely tufted shoots; roots pale yellow-brown and grey-brown scales that soon become fibrous and decay completely. Stems 5–40 cm, often shorter than the leaves, subterete, solid, and often slightly curved. Leaves 5–35 cm × 1.5–5 mm, rigid, recurved, ± flat with keeled midrib, ± abruptly tapered at the apex, dark yellow-green, dying to straw colour and often overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths hyaline or white with green veins, persistent, becoming grey-brown; apex of inner face ± straight; ligule c. 1 mm, rounded, notched. Inflorescence in the upper half of the stem, often with a solitary distant spike at the base; bracts leaf-like, often reflexed, ± flaccid and, except for the lowest, well exceeding the inflorescence. Male spike 1, 15–20 mm, with male glumes 3–4 mm, oblong-lanceolate, orange-brown to hyaline with paler midrib, apex obtuse. Female spikes 2–4, ± contiguous but usually with the lowest remote, 7–13 mm, ovoid; peduncles short, the lower up to four times as long as the spike, half ensheathed; female glumes c. 3.5 mm, ovate, brown with green midrib, apex subacute. Utricles 3–4 mm, obovoid, abruptly narrowed into a beak, patent, lower ones deflexed when ripe, yellow-green, faintly ribbed; beak c. 1 mm, occupying less than 1/3 of total length, bifid, not or rarely slightly deflexed (although drying may cause unequal collapse of the utricle apex, deflecting the beak); stigmas 3; nut obovoid, trigonous.
