Description Plants colonial from long-creeping rhizomes. Culms 20–60 cm × 0.5–0.8 mm, distally smooth. Leaves: blades trigonous-channeled in cross section, to 30 cm × 1–2 mm; distal leaf blade 1–4 cm × 1–1.5 mm, shorter than its 3.5–5.5 cm sheath. Inflorescences: blade-bearing involucral bracts solitary, similar to distal leaf, blade usually gray or black proximally, 0.6–2 cm. Spikelets (1–)2–5, in subumbels, narrowly ovoid, 7–10 mm in flower, 15–25 mm in fruit; peduncles 5–30 mm, scabrous; scales black or dark gray with black tip, broadly ovate, 3–4 mm, scarious, margins absent or to 0.1 mm wide, 5–9-ribbed, midrib prominent, usually dilated distally, reaching tip, apex obtuse-subacute. Flowers: perianth bristles 10 or more, white, 10–15 mm, smooth; anthers 1–2.5 mm. Achenes narrowly obovoid, 1.5–3 mm. [details]

Description Rhizomes extensive, long-creeping. Stems 20–60 cm 0.4–0.8 mm, distant, solitary, erect, smooth, nodose in lower half only, triquetrous. Leaves basal and cauline; blade 2–40 cm 0.5–2 mm, linear, 3-angled and slightly channelled, narrowed to an obtuse apex, yellowish- to bluish-green; sheaths up to 8 cm long (to 5 cm on cauline leaves), close-fitting, pale to mid brown (greenish on some cauline leaves), the uppermost with blade rarely more than 1/2 as long as the sheath; ligule short, rounded. Inflorescence terminal, comprising 3–6 pedunculate spikelets, becoming ± pendulous in fruit; peduncles up to 3 cm long, slender, rough, densely but minutely hairy; involucral bracts 1–2, leaf-like to glume-like, sheathing, the lowermost ± equalling or shorter than the lowermost spikelet. Spikelets ovoid to ellipsoid when young, soon becoming obscured by lengthening perianth segments. Glumes 4–5 1.5–2.2 mm, spirally arranged, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, the upper slightly narrower than the lower, ± acute, membranous, several-nerved, yellowish-brown to greenish-brown; margins entire. Flowers bisexual; perianth bristles many, entire at the apex, elongating to 1.5–2 cm and forming a white, cotton-like head; stamens 3; anthers 1.3–2 mm long; stigmas 3. Nuts 2.5–3 0.5–0.7 mm, ellipsoid-cylindric, trigonous, dull yellowish-brown, ± smooth. [details]
