Nomenclature note Wachst in Pensylvanien an ganz feuchten Orten wenigstens 1 bis 1½ Schuh, oder darüber hoch. Ich bin aber zweifelhaft, ob dieses Gras mit dem folgenden nicht einerley ist? Da auch beyde nach Hrn. Mühlenberg, der selbst zweifelhaft ist, einerley Standort haben; und so finde ich auch an später erhaltenen Exemplaren mit reifen Kapseln dieser Pflanze, daß der Saame an den Ecken gan ; so gekerde ist, wie der folgende, Tab. Hhh. Fig. 154., der mir keinen Zweifel übrig läßt. Die Aehren ändern an ihrer Lange, so wie die Schuppen, auch bey andern Arten, an ihrer Spitze sammt den Grannen etwas ab.
[It grows in Pennsylvania in very damp places, at least 1 to 1½ feet high, or more. However, I am doubtful whether this grass is not identical to the following [C. rostrata Muhl ex Willd]? Since both, according to Mr. Mühlenberg, who himself has doubts, have the same habitat; and so I also find on more mature specimens of this plant with ripe capsules, that the seed is completely rounded at the corners, just like the following, Tab. Hhh. Fig. 154, which leaves me no doubt. The spikes vary in length, as do the scales; the same variation is found in other species; the awns and tips also vary somewhat.] [details]
