Description Rhizomes shortly creeping, with tufted shoots, thick grey-brown roots and persistent orange-brown scales; stems 15–150 cm, trigonous-terete and often bearing a single furrow. Leaves 7–30 cm × 2–6(–8) mm, rigid, often arcuate in dwarf plants, keeled or ± flat, abruptly tapering to a fine point, matt dark green above and glossy light green with dark green veins below, later developing wine-red splotches and persisting as pink- or orange-brown litter, often overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths dull red-brown and persistent; apex convex or straight on lower leaves and lingulate on stem leaves; ligule 1–2 mm, rounded, with about 0.5 mm of free cartilaginous tissue, involute and with a minutely papillate margin. The inflorescence reaches up to half the stem length, with lower bracts leaf-like and 2–4 times as long as the spike, the upper bracts glume-like. The male spike is solitary, 20–45 mm, with male glumes 4–4.5 mm, oblong-obovate, purplish with a paler midrib, the apex obtuse or rounded and mucronate, scarious. Female spikes 2–4, distant, 15–45 mm, cylindric and rigid, the lowermost usually nodding; peduncles half-ensheathed, the lowest up to 10 cm; female glumes 3–4 mm, ovate, dark purple-brown to black with a green or pale brown midrib, apex obtuse and mucronate. Utricles 3.5–4.5 mm, purple-brown or partly green, broadly elliptic with two prominent green lateral nerves continuing into the beak; beak 1–1.5 mm, rough and widely notched; stigmas 3; nut obovoid, trigonous and olive-brown. [details]

Description Densamente cespitosa. 3 estigmas. 2n=72, 74. Brezales y prados húmedos, bordes de arroyos y turberas. [details]

Description Densely caespitose. Fertile stems (40)60–130(170) cm tall. Leaves (2)3.5–5(11) mm wide, flat, more rarely folded, shorter than the stems; basal sheaths orange and/or tinged with purple; ligule (0.7)1.5–3.5(7) mm long. Lower bract leafy, shorter than the inflorescence, sheathing. Inflorescence a raceme of spikes of different appearance, the upper one – more rarely the upper two – male, fusiform; the 2–4 lower ones female, cylindrical, separated, erect or the lowermost pendulous. Female glumes ovate, mucronate, dark reddish-purple. Utricles (2.5)3–4(5) mm long, variably tinged with red, dull, suberect, with all veins visible, but only the two lateral ones very prominent, gradually – less frequently abruptly – narrowed into a beak (0.5)0.8–1.2(1.4) mm long, somewhat scabrous, bifid. Achenes elliptic in outline. 3 stigmas. 2n=72, 74. Heathlands and wet meadows, stream margins and peat bogs. [details]
