Description Rhizomes short- or long-creeping; shoots solitary or in pairs, ± close together; roots often as thick as rhizomes, grey-brown; scales red- or purple-brown, shiny, persistent. Stems 4–30 cm, usually rough, rigid, usually >2 mm wide near base, sharply trigonous. Leaves up to 25 cm × 2–7 mm, stiff or arcuate, ± rough, keeled, ± abruptly tapered to a flat apex, with margins often revolute and rolling outwards on drying, glaucous and papillous below, less glaucous, ± glossy and devoid of papillae above, dying to a red-brown; hypostomous; sheaths brown or red-brown and shiny, persistent, with inner face hyaline, soon decaying; apex ± straight; ligule 1–2 mm, acute, shortly tubular. Inflorescence 1/8–1/5 (up to 1/2) length of stem; bracts leaf-like, with blackish auricles, lowest shorter than inflorescence. Male spike 1, rarely 2, 5–20 mm; male glumes 3–4 mm, obovate-elliptic, black with green midrib; apex acute or rounded. Female spikes 2–3, contiguous or lower ± distant, 5–15 mm, cylindric-ovoid, erect, sessile, lowest sometimes shortly pedunculate; female glumes 2.5–3.5 mm, ovate-elliptic, black with green midrib; apex obtuse. Utricles 2.5–3 mm, broader than glumes, suborbicular-ellipsoid, nerveless, green; beak c. 0.2 mm, truncate or slightly notched; nut ovoid-ellipsoid, biconvex. [details]

Description Plants cespitose or not. Culms acutely angled, 10–50 cm, scabrous. Leaves: sheaths of proximal leaves glabrous, fronts lacking spots and veins, apex concave; blades 1.5–4 mm wide. Inflorescences: proximal bract setaceous or foliaceous, shorter than inflorescence, 0.5–3 mm wide. Spikes erect; proximal (1–)2–3 spikes pistillate, 0.7–3 cm × 3–4 mm, base cuneate or attenuate; terminal 1(–2) spikes staminate. Pistillate scales black, equaling or shorter than perigynia, apex obtuse or acute, awnless. Perigynia ascending, green, spotted purple-black or mottled on apical 1/2, veinless, somewhat flattened, tightly enclosing the achenes, ellipsoid, 1.5–3.5 × 0.9–2 mm, dull, apex rounded or acute, papillose; stipe to 0.45 mm; beak 0–0.2(–1) mm. Achenes not constricted, dull. [details]
