Description Rhizomes shortly creeping, with tufted shoots and orange-brown to black roots that are not felty, the scales brown or rarely red and becoming fibrous; stems 15–100 cm and trigonous. Leaves 10–50 cm × 2–7 mm, usually as long as the stem but variable, flat or shallowly keeled, abruptly tapered to a fine tip, pale or yellow-green, persisting as grey-brown litter when dead and doubtfully overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths persistent, orange- or pink-brown, the inner face hyaline and the apex dark brown and concave; ligule 3 mm, obtuse and tubular at least on the culm. The inflorescence is about half the stem length, with leaf-like bracts, at least one usually (but not always) exceeding the inflorescence. The male spike is solitary, 10–30 mm, with male glumes 3–4 mm, oblong-obovate, orange-brown, the apex mucronate and often fimbriate. Female spikes 2–4, the upper ± contiguous and the lower distant, 5–25 mm, ovoid-cylindric, with peduncles ensheathed; female glumes 2.5–3.5 mm, obovate, yellowish or pale brown with a green midrib and hyaline margin, the apex acuminate or obtuse and mucronate. Utricles 3–4 mm, obovoid-ellipsoid, shiny, yellowish-green and minutely dotted with red-brown, ± inflated and prominently ribbed when dry, with prominent lateral nerves and inserted at a 75–90º angle to the stem axis, thus strongly patent, narrowing abruptly into a 0.75 mm notched beak; stigmas 3; nut obovoid, trigonous, dark brown and shortly stalked. [details]

Description Densamente cespitosa, con rizoma bastante endeble. 2n = 68. [details]

Description Densely tufted, with a rather weak rhizome. Fertile stems (15)20–80 cm, smooth, obtusely trigonous. Leaves (2)4–8 mm wide, shorter than the stems, flat or folded, not very rigid, smooth or somewhat scabrous on the margins of the apical zone; ligule 4–7 mm, with a ± obtuse apex, narrower than the blade; antiligule very short and obtuse, sometimes absent; basal sheaths light or dark brown, entire. Lower bract leaf-like, often longer than the inflorescence. Male spike solitary, (10)15–30(35) × 1.5–2.5 mm, sometimes androgynous, cylindrical; female spikes 3–6, 7–24 × 5–7 mm, the upper one sometimes androgynous, close together or only the lower one distant, ovoid or shortly cylindrical, erect. Male glumes narrowly oval, mucronate or awned, hyaline or light brown; female glumes oval, mucronate, light brown or, less frequently, hyaline. Utricles 3–3.6 × 1.3–1.5 mm, completely spreading at maturity, very shiny, multinerved although, except for the 2 lateral ones, the nerves are scarcely prominent, abruptly narrowed into a beak up to 1 mm, smooth, bidentate. Achenes 1.9–2.1 × 1.1–1.3 mm, elliptical in outline, trigonous. 2n = 68. [details]
