Description Plants loosely cespitose, with ± elongate rhizomes; roots pale brown, felted with yellow root hairs when young; fertile culms 20-80 cm tall, trigonous, smooth, with glabrous, reddish purple, bladeless basal sheaths with stramineous veins. Leaves 4-7(-10), mostly basal; blades 10-28 cm long, 2.5-4.6 mm wide, plicate, papillose abaxially, otherwise glabrous, the margins antrorsely scabrous distally, the widest leaves 3.2-4.6 mm wide; leaf sheaths 2.5-8 cm long, tightly enveloping culms, glabrous, purple-tinged, especially near base; inner band of sheaths reddish purple near base, hyaline and purple-dotted above, glabrous, the apex concave; ligules 1.4-4.3 mm long, truncate to rounded, the free portion conspicuous, hyaline or purple-tinged. Vegetative shoots ca. 12-40 cm tall; leaves 5-6, similar to those of fertile culms in width, but with blades up to 35 cm long; pseudoculms ca. 3-6.5 cm tall. Comparison Hermann (1974) recognized both C. pertenuis and C. venosivaginata. His descriptions of these two species are essentially the same, but in his key he stated that C. pertenuis had "culms loosely cespitose, the rootstocks elongate; perigynia scarcely beaked" whereas C. venosivaginata had "culms densely cespitose, from a short rootstock; perigynia definitely beaked". However, the type of C. venosivaginata has well-developed rhizomes several centimeters long and perigynia gradually tapered to an indistinct beak. [details]Comparison Carex pertenuis is similar to C. huehueteca and C. steyermarkii in having roots densely felted with yellow root hairs, all spikes androgynous, staminate and pistillate scales rough-awned, and perigynia gradually tapered to the apex. However, the narrow leaves of C. pertenuis are diagnostic. In overall aspect, C. pertenuis might seem similar to C. perlonga and C. flexirostris, but in addition to glabrous lower sheaths noted in the key, C. pertenuis differs in its androgynous terminal spike, consistently awned staminate scales, and usually shorter ligule. Ecology Carex pertenuis occurs in cloud forest between 1500 and 2600 m from the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes of Guatemala north into Veracruz, Mexico. Fruiting occurs from February to June. [details]
