Description A delicate tufted perennial with about 0.5 mm thick stolons. Culms 8–35 cm long and 0.4–0.7 mm thick, triangular, almost smooth; the base covered with brown sheathes. Leaf-blades 1–20 cm long and 0.3–1.5 mm wide, flat or incurved and then appearing almost filiform, scabrous on margin. Inflorescence a solitary terminal spike 1–3 cm long and 2–4 mm wide, consisting of 4–8 female flowers below and some male flowers above; glumes lanceolate with green middle and a yellowish-brown almost colourless or with red margin and yellowish brown margin above apex, rooted and minutely hairy or frayed. Style-branches 2. Utricle 6–7 mm long (including a 2.0–2.5 mm long very narrow beak), narrowly lanceolate with concave base and apex and with 2 longitudinal ribs, green as young, turning brown or olive as mature, sometimes the utricle without completely united edges and therefore exposing the nutlet on one side (in F. friesii E.P. Banning). Nutlet about 3.2 mm long (including a 0.3 mm long beak) and 1.3–1.4 mm wide, oblong, greyish brown. [details]
