Leaves 20–120 cm × 12–20 mm, rigid, thin, keeled, ± flat, abruptly tapering to a blunt point, with margins rough, yellow-green above, matt-glaucous beneath, with up to 69 thin, close-packed, inconspicuous veins (T. O’Mahony pers. comm.), red-brown on dying, often overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths red-brown, persistent, with inner face hyaline only at concave apex; ligule 40–80 mm long, acute, with free margin < 1 mm wide. Inflorescence c. 1/3 to 1/2 length of stem; bracts leaf-like, ± equalling or slightly shorter than inflorescence. Male spikes 1–2, 6–10 cm; male glumes 6–8 mm, lanceolate, brownish-hyaline; apex acuminate. Hojas 8–16(19) mm de anchura, de menor longitud que los tallos, plegadas, muy ásperas en los bordes, ± rígidas, envés algo glauco; lígula hasta 7,5 mm, de ápice agudo o subagudo; sin antelígula; vainas basales escuamiformes, de color pardo oscuro, pardo púrpura oscuro o rojizo, enteras. Bráctea inferior folíacea, de mayor longitud que la inflorescencia, largamente envainante. Leaves 8–16(19) mm wide, shorter than the stems, folded, very rough along the margins, ± rigid, with the abaxial surface slightly glaucous; ligule up to 7.5 mm, with an acute or subacute apex; without antiligule; basal sheaths scale-like, dark brown, dark purplish-brown or reddish, entire. Lower bract foliaceous, longer than the inflorescence, long-sheathing. Male spike solitary, rarely 2, 80–160 mm long, cylindrical; female spikes (2)3–5(7), (60)100–210 mm long, cylindrical, very dense, approximate, pendulous or erect; the upper sometimes androgynous, or exceptionally all androgynous, very long-pedunculate, pendulous.
