Description Rhizomes very short and ascending, forming dense tussocks up to 1.5 m high and 1 m in diameter; roots thick, dark brown, felty; scales dark brown, shiny, ribbed, persistent. Stems 60–150 cm, rough, trigonous, spreading. Leaves 20–120 cm × (2–)4–7 mm, stiff, channelled or involute, dark green, smooth, rounded and shiny beneath, with many transverse septa, distinctly impressed on upper leaf-face, tapering abruptly to a trigonous apex; margins serrulate; overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths persistent, the lowermost brown, with lateral faces ribbed, herbaceous, often overlapping margins of hyaline inner face, reducing it to a narrow central strip; apex brown, concave; ligule 2–5 mm, rounded. Inflorescence a compact panicle, 5–15 cm (except in forma simplex, in which some spikes are separated); bracts setaceous or glumaceous with broad hyaline margin and excurrent midrib. Spikes numerous, mostly compound, made up of clusters of spikelets 5–8 mm, male at top, female below; some lower spikelets all female, pedunculate, yellow-brown and grass-like. Male glumes 3–4 mm, ovate-lanceolate, orange-brown, hyaline, with a pale midrib; apex acute. Female glumes 3–4 mm, ovate-triangular, appressed to utricle, orange-brown to greyish with wide hyaline margin; apex acute or acuminate. Utricles 3–4 mm, ovoid, ± trigonous, ventricose at base, ribbed, green to dark brown; beak 1–1.5 mm, broadly winged, serrulate; stigmas 2; nut ovoid, biconvex. [details]

Description Densamente cespitosa, formadora de grandes macollas. [details]

Translation Densely caespitose, forming large tussocks. Stems 40–130(150) cm, trigonous, with acute angles, scabrid over the upper 1/4 to 3/4. Leaves (2.5)3–7(8) mm wide, shorter than the stems, flat or channelled, strongly rough along the margins, rather stiff; ligules (0.2)1–2(4) mm, obtuse, rounded or truncate; without anteligule; basal sheaths entire, scale-like, brown. Lowest bract much shorter than the inflorescence, often even shorter than its corresponding branch, setaceous, rarely foliaceous, not sheathing. Spikes small, very numerous, in very much-branched paniculate inflorescences (2.8)7–30(39.5) cm long, ± oval. Glumes ovate, acute or mucronate, straw-brown in colour, with a broad scarious margin, the female glumes generally shorter than the utricles. Utricles (2.4)2.5–3.7(4.5) × 0.9–2 mm, broadly triangular in outline (pyriform), plano-convex, spongy at the base, with very thick walls in the lower half, with several strongly marked nerves or nervation scarcely perceptible, dark brown, attenuated into a beak (0.5)0.7–1(1.6) mm long, slightly winged, serrulate, bifid, with a cleft on the abaxial face. Achenes 1.3–2.5 × 0.7–1.2 mm, oval in outline, plano-convex or biconvex, slightly stipitate, with the persistent base of the style forming a short column. [details]
