Description Rhizomes very short, with tufted shoots; roots usually dark red-brown and brown, often red-tinged scales. Stems 20–60 cm, trigonous and rough on the sharp angles. Leaves 15–50 cm × 2–5 mm, soft, with scattered hairs beneath, flat or often keeled, gradually tapering to a fine point, mid-green, turning grey-brown on dying; hypostomous; sheaths brown, hairy, persistent, with hyaline, hairy inner face, apex concave; ligule c. 5 mm, acute or obtuse, tubular. Inflorescence up to 1/4 the length of the stem but usually much shorter; bracts leaf-like, lower ones exceeding the inflorescence and usually crimped at the base, uppermost setaceous. Male spike 1, 8–12 mm, often concealed by female spikes; male glumes 3–4 mm, obovate-oblong, pale brown with often darker midrib, apex mucronate. Female spikes 2–3, clustered or with the lower remote, 5–20 mm, subglobose to ovoid, suberect or lower nodding; peduncles smooth, the lower often longer than the spike; female glumes 3–4 mm, ovate, pale brown or hyaline with broad midrib, apex acuminate. Utricles 2.5–3.5 mm, ovoid-oblong, apex rounded and not beaked, mid-green, shiny, faintly nerved; stigmas 3; nut ellipsoid, trigonous, stalked. [details]

Description Cespitosa, con rizoma no muy robusto.
