Description Rhizomes very short, ascending, usually forming dense tussocks up to 1 m high and 80 cm in diameter; roots thick, dark brown, felty; scales dark brown-black, eventually breaking up into wiry fibres. Stems 40–80 cm, rough, trigonous. Leaves 20–80 cm × 1–3 mm, stiff, keeled, yellow-green; hypostomous; sheaths of sterile shoots forming a false stem, the lowermost dark brown with shorter blades, with inner face hyaline; apex brown, concave; ligule 2–3 mm, rounded. Inflorescence a compact panicle 4–8 cm; bracts setaceous or glumaceous. Spikes made up of spikelets 4–7 mm, male at top, female below; lower spikelets pedunculate and compound, some all female. Male glumes 3–4 mm, ovate, reddish-brown, with hyaline margin and apex acute. Female glumes 3–4 mm, ovate, acuminate, red-brown, becoming hyaline in fruit. Utricles (2.7–)3–4 mm, ovoid to subglobose, ± abruptly narrowed into the beak; beak (0.7–)1–1.5 mm, rough, not winged, notched, sometimes split on adaxial side; stigmas 2; nut ovoid, biconvex. [details]
