Original description C. spicula androgyna apice masculina solitaria, stigmatibus tribus, perigynio ovato-lanceolato gluma ovata mucronulata longiore, culmo triquetro scabro, foliis planis.Hab. in Nootka-Sund. 24
Culmi adscendentes pedales triquetri angulis scabri striati, inferne foliosi. Folia 1 lineam lata culmo aequilonga linearia plana, margine carinaque scabra. Spicula terminalis solitaria cylindrica pollicaris, apice masculina, ad tertiam aut quartam partem inferne feminea. Glumae ovatae universae margine fuscescentes, dorso pallidae, infimae mucronato-aristatae, reliquae mucronulatae. Stamina tria. Stigmata tria scabra, rarissimime duo. Perigynium ovato-lanceolatum breviter rostratum, angustissime marginatum, laeve, gluma longius. [details]
Translation Spike androgynous, solitary, with a male apex; stigmas three; perigynium ovate-lanceolate, longer than the ovate mucronulate glume; culm triquetrous and rough, leaves flat.
Habitat: Nootka Sound.
Culms ascending, one foot tall, triquetrous, rough along the angles and striated, leafy below. Leaves one line wide, as long as the culm, linear, flat, rough along the margin and keel. Terminal spike solitary, cylindrical, one inch long, male at the apex, female in the lower third or fourth part. Glumes ovate, all with brownish margins, pale on the back; the lowest mucronate-aristate, the others mucronulate. Stamens three. Stigmas three, rough, very rarely two. Perigynium ovate-lanceolate, shortly beaked, very narrowly margined, smooth, longer than the glume. [details]
