Description Rhizomes shortly creeping, often much branched; shoots ± tufted; roots purple-brown, slender; scales shiny, red-brown, persistent. Stems 7–20 cm, stiff, trigonous, solid. Leaves 5–20 cm, 1–1.5 mm, often curled or twisted, flat below, becoming keeled towards the gradually attenuated, trigonous apex, dull dark green, persistent on dying; hypostomous; sheaths red- or orange-brown, ribbed, persistent; inner face hyaline, becoming brown and persisting, with a straight, brown apex; ligule 0.5–2 mm, rounded, ± tubular. Inflorescence a single, terminal spike 7–15 mm, male above, female below, with a single bract at base of spike, glumaceous with a setaceous point, caducous. Male glumes 2.5–3 mm, ovate, red- or purple-brown, with obscure midrib; apex acute. Female glumes 2.5–3.5 mm, elliptic to broadly ovate, dark red- or purple-brown, with obscure midrib and narrowly hyaline margins, persistent; apex obtuse, sometimes mucronate.
