Description A tufted perennial forming hard tussocks up to 1 m high. Culms 20–60 cm high and 1–2 mm thick, terete (round) or somewhat angular below the spike (in specimens from Mt. Elgon), glabrous or rarely rough on the angles, rising in groups from a slowly creeping rhizome, with conspicuous groups of dead stems. Each stem flowers when about 20 cm high, but later elongates to 30–60 cm, remaining green long after the fruit is ripe and the spike broken off. Stem bases enclosed by yellowish brown glabrous sheaths. Uppermost sheath with 0.5–2.5 cm long (or less) leaves on Mt. Elgon-plants); lowermost leaf-blades, which after the spreading from the stem and looking leaf-like. When fresh the bases are often slimy from a slime-forming bacterium or algae, while in dry material the slime cements the parts together. Inflorescence a solitary terminal spike. Inflorescence-bracts 5–15 mm long, dark or pale brown with or without pale 3-nerved midribs; margin very shortly ciliate; apex often with a short toothed awn. Spike with female flowers below and male above, 3–5 cm long and up to 10 mm broad with glumes spreading, 1–3 mm broad, broadly lanceolate, usually dark brown with paler midribs; margins sometimes paler, shortly ciliate; apex acute, often somewhat recurved. Stamens 3; anthers about 4 mm long and 0.3 mm broad, ending in an about 1 mm long subula. Ovary with 2-branched style. Utricles 3.5–4.0 mm long (including the beak) and about 1.2 mm broad, pale brown with dark beak, compressed and hidden by the glumes; margin scabrous.
