Description Rhizomes short; shoots densely tufted, often forming stools up to 30 cm high; roots pale purple-brown; scales brown, persistent or more rarely becoming fibrous. Stems 30–75 cm, spreading, slender, trigonous or with two serrulate angles towards top. Leaves 25–60 cm × 1.5–2 mm, channelled, gradually tapering to a long slender pendulous point, mid green to yellow-green, overwintering; sheaths pale yellow-brown, persistent, forming false stems in sterile shoots, hyaline; apex shallowly concave to deeply V-shaped, protruding up to 1.8 mm above blade/sheath union; ligule 1–2 mm, long tubular, rounded or obtuse, with free tissue c. 0.6–1 mm wide. Inflorescence 1/4–1/3 length of stem, up to 30 cm, often curved; lower bracts leaf-like, exceeding inflorescence, upper glumaceous. Spikes 4–9, 3–10 mm, sessile, ovoid to oblong-cylindrical, upper ± contiguous, simple, female at top, male at base, lower remote, rarely branched, entirely female, the latter commonly with 17–30(–40) utricles (T. O’Mahony pers. comm.). Male glumes 2.5–3 mm, ovate-elliptic, pale brown-hyaline, with green midrib; apex acute. Female glumes c. 2.5 mm, lanceolate to ovate, pale brown or hyaline, with green midrib; apex acute. Utricles 2.5–3.5 mm, ovoid-ellipsoid, plano-convex, green, ± shiny, distinctively veined on abaxial face; beak 0.5 mm, broad, minutely toothed, split; stigmas 2; nut ovoid, biconvex. [details]

Description Cespitosa. 2n = 60, 62.* [details]

Translation Densely tufted. Stems (15)25–50(80) cm, trigonous, smooth or ± scabrid above. Leaves (0.5)1.5–2.2(2.5) mm wide, similar in length to the stems, flat, rough along the margins, ± soft; ligule 1.2–1.8(2) mm long, slightly wider than the blade, with an obtuse apex, free for much of its length; without an antiligule; basal sheaths scale-like, pale brown, entire or ± fibrous. Lower bract much longer than the inflorescence, leaf-like, not sheathing. Spikes widely separated from each other, forming a very lax inflorescence, the upper ones less distant. Glumes oval, acute, greenish or hyaline with a green midrib, the female glumes shorter than the utricles. Utricles (2.9)3–3.2(3.5) × 1–1.3 mm, oval in outline, plano-convex, spongy at the base, with prominent nerves, greenish or brownish, gradually attenuate into a (0.5)0.7–0.8(1) mm beak, scabrid, bifid. Achenes 1.4–1.6 × 1–1.1 mm, obovate or elliptic-flattened in outline, dark brown to black, with the style base persistent as a short column. 2n = 60, 62*. [details]
