Description Rizoma de entrenudos largos. 2n = 60+2f, 62, 62+f, 62+3f. [details]

Description Rhizomes far-creeping; shoots single or in pairs, often 14–16 nodes apart; roots grey-brown, much branched; scales brown, becoming dark and fibrous. Stems 20–100 cm, erect, rough, sharply trigonous. Leaves 15–60 cm × 2–4 mm, smooth on both surfaces but rough on veins beneath, thick, ± flat but with keeled midrib, gradually tapering to a flat rough tip, mid green; hypostomous; sheaths forming false stems in sterile shoots, with inner face hyaline only around concave apex, otherwise herbaceous; lower sheaths with very short blades, brown, persistent; ligule 3–7 mm, obtuse, tubular. Inflorescence a dense panicle, 2–7 cm, forming a broadly lanceoloid to ellipsoid head, narrowed in middle; bracts glumaceous, brown-hyaline or the lowest leaf-like and exceeding inflorescence. Spikes numerous, contiguous, sessile, terminal female (sometimes overtopped by male spikelets), intermediate male, lower all female or sometimes male at base. Male glumes 4–5 mm, lanceolate, pale red-brown, with hyaline margins; apex acute. Female glumes 3.5–4.5 mm, ovate-lanceolate, pale red-brown, with hyaline margins; apex acute. Utricles 4–5 mm, ovoid, many-ribbed, red-brown, with very narrow, ± serrate, lateral wings; beak c. 1 mm, rough, split; stigmas 2; nut ovate, biconvex, shortly stalked. [details]

Translation Rhizome with long internodes. Stems 20–60(100) cm, trigonous, with acute angles, scabrid in the upper part. Leaves (1)2–4(5) mm wide, shorter than the stems, flat, scabrid along the margins of the upper zone, soft; ligule 2.5–5(6) mm, with free margins raised or not, narrower than the blade, apex acute, obtuse or rounded; anteligule absent; basal sheaths scale-like, entire or rarely somewhat fibrous, brown. Lower bract much shorter than the inflorescence, glumaceous, with setaceous apex, rarely exceeding the spike. Spikes arranged in a simple spike (1)1.8–4.7(5) cm, grouped or rarely somewhat separated, the upper ones female, the middle ones male (sometimes with a utricle at the base) or with male flowers at the apex and base and the middle portion female, and the lower ones female. Glumes ovate, acute or acuminate, light greenish-brown, rarely dark, in which case they have a hyaline margin; female glumes equal to or slightly shorter than the utricles. Utricles 4–4.5(5) mm, ovate in outline, plano-convex, spongy at the base, with margins not very narrowly winged, prominently nerved, greenish, gradually attenuated into a (1.1)1.4–1.7 mm beak, scabrid-serrulate, bifid. Achenes 1.7–1.9(2) × 0.7–1.4 mm, ovate, ellipsoid or oblong, biconvex, with the persistent style base forming a short column. 2n = 60+2f, 62, 62+f, 62+3f. [details]
