Description Rhizomes short and much branched, with tufted shoots of two kinds: apical leafy shoots with overwintering terminal buds and lateral short shoots ending in a flowering stem; roots wiry, fibrous, deep brown; scales deep red-brown, becoming fibrous. Stems 5–20 mm, slender, trigonous-subterete, with 2–4 short (up to 1 cm), often setaceous leaves at the base. Leaves 5–20 cm × 1–3 mm, soft, ± flat or slightly keeled, abruptly tapered to a blunt point, light or mid-green, often overwintering; margins rough; hypostomous; sheaths orange- to dark crimson-brown, becoming fibrous, with herbaceous inner face; apex concave, soon splitting; ligule 0.5–1 mm, rounded. Inflorescence 1/8–1/10 the length of the stem, compact, ± digitate, with spikes arising within 5 mm; bracts glumaceous, sheathing for < 2 mm. Male spike 1, 5–8 mm, few-flowered, overtopped by the lower female spikes and appearing lateral; male glumes c. 2.5 mm, obovate, red-brown with pale midrib and hyaline margin, apex acute or mucronate. Female spikes 2–3, 5–10 mm, 2–4(–5)-flowered, ± sessile or the lowest with peduncle up to 3 mm; female glumes 2–2.5 mm, obovate, pale orange-brown with hyaline margin, apex obtuse or ± acute, often erose. Utricles 2–3 mm, obovoid to narrowly pyriform, yellow-green to brown, pilose but hairs may fall with age; beak almost absent, truncate; stigmas 3; nut obovoid, trigonous, stalked. [details]

Bráctea inferior glumácea, no folíacea. 2n = ca. 46*, 52*, 54*, 56*. [details]

Translation Loosely cespitose, sometimes with somewhat elongated, ascending rhizome internodes. Stems (3.5)5–15(17) cm, obtusely trigonous, smooth or scabrid at the apex, lateral, leafless or with 1–2 leaves reduced to a sheath with a poorly developed blade. Leaves (0.3)2–3.5(4.5) mm wide, shorter than the stems, rarely somewhat longer, smooth except along the margins of the apical zone, flat or slightly channelled, curved or straight, somewhat rigid; ligule minute, with an acute or obtuse apex, broader than the blade; no antiligule; basal sheaths with a developed blade, somewhat torn to fibrous, brown. Lower bract glumaceous, not foliaceous. Male spike solitary, (4)6–9(11) mm, linear; female spikes (1)2–3, (2.5)5–10(12) mm, grouped with the male, sessile or subsessile, erect, linear, lax. Male glumes oval, with obtuse or acute apex, reddish-brown, with scarious margin; female glumes broadly obovate, with obtuse, truncate or rounded apex, brown to reddish-brown, sometimes very dark, with scarious margin, shorter than the utricles. Utricles 2–3(3.5) × 0.9–1.2 mm, suberect, oval or obovate in outline, trigonous, with nerves scarcely perceptible except the two lateral ones, pubescent or rarely glabrous, greenish or brownish, gradually narrowed to attenuate into a beak 0.1–0.3 mm long, entire or shortly bidentate. Achenes 1.7–2.5 × 0.8–1.1 mm, elliptic in outline, trigonous, brown. 2n = c. 46*, 52*, 54*, 56*. [details]
