Description Plants cespitose, with short rhizomes; roots brown, not densely felted with root hairs; fertile culms 75–85 cm tall, trigonous, smooth, with glabrous, brown, bladeless basal sheaths. Leaves ca. 11, mostly basal; blades 8–25 cm long, 4.4–8 mm wide, plicate, glaucous, whitish-papillose abaxially, glabrous adaxially, the margins antrorsely scabrous distally, smooth proximally, the widest leaves ca. 8 mm wide; leaf sheaths 1.5–12 cm long, tightly enveloping culms, glabrous, green; inner band of sheaths glabrous, pale brown below, hyaline and brown-streaked near apex, the apex truncate or slightly concave; ligules 3.5–6 mm long, rounded to acute, the free portion brown. Vegetative shoots unknown. Inflorescences 28–47 cm long, with the upper spikes strongly overlapping and the lowest two spikes 12–21.5 cm distant; spikes single at nodes, with all but the upper pendulous on filiform, flexuous, slightly scabrous peduncles; lowermost spikes with peduncles 7.5–10.5 cm long, the uppermost lateral spikes sessile; lowermost bracts with blades 10.5–21 cm long and 2.5–4.8 mm wide and sheaths 4.6–8.5 cm long, the uppermost bracts much reduced. Spikes 6–7, the upper 2 staminate, the rest androgynous or the lowermost rarely pistillate. Terminal spikes 3.1–5.2 cm long, 3.8–4.9 mm wide, ca. 90–140-flowered; peduncles 2.0–6.5 mm long. Lateral staminate spikes 1–2.5 cm long, ca. 20–70-flowered, sessile; lateral androgynous spikes 3.1–5.7 cm long; staminate portion (0–)0.3–2.6 cm long, (0–)2–70-flowered; pistillate portion 1.6–5.2 cm long, 5.4–9.8 mm wide, 25–110-flowered. Pistillate scales 3.3–4.9 mm long, 1.4–2.3 mm wide, elliptic to obovate, acute, mostly with a short cusp up to 0.4 mm long formed by the excurrent midvein, dark reddish brown with stramineous or hyaline margins, 1–(3)-veined. Staminate scales 4.1–6.3 mm long, 1.4–2.1 mm wide, oblong to narrowly obovate, obtuse to acute, reddish brown with hyaline margins, 1-veined. Perigynia (3.3–)3.5–5.4 mm long, 1.1–1.7 mm wide, spreading, trigonous with flat to convex, obovate sides, green, red-dotted, strongly purple-mottled on proximal half, glabrous, sessile, 7–17-veined with 2 veins prominent and the rest faint, contracted into a beak; beaks 0.6–1.2 mm long, green or stramineous, the apex obscurely bidentulate with teeth up to 0.3 mm long.
