Description A tufted perennial with a creeping rhizome and usually sterile as well as fertile shoots. Culms 10–80 cm long and 0.5–1.5 mm thick, sharply triangular, scabrous on the angles. Leaf-blades 10–30 cm long and 1.5–4.0 mm wide, scabrous on margins, crowded near the base. Leaf-sheaths brown enclosing the base of the culm. Inflorescence a solitary terminal spike 1–4 cm long and 2–8 mm wide, with female flowers below and male above. Inflorescence-bracts similar to the glumes but with a longer awn. Glumes 6–9 mm long, lanceolate with a long tapering apex, light to dark brown with pale middle and marginal border. Ovary with 2-branched style. Utricles 3.5–4.0 mm long (including the beak) and 1.2–1.5 mm broad, obovate in outline, compressed and hidden by the glumes. [details]
