Leaves 8-15, mostly basal; blades 18-55 cm long, 3.1-7 mm wide, plicate, glabrous abaxially, densely antrorsely scabrous adaxially, the margins antrorsely scabrous, the widest leaves 6.5-7 mm wide; leaf sheaths 3-13 cm long, +- tightly enveloping culms, glabrous to hispidulous with red prickle-hairs, strongly purple-tinged near base; inner band of sheaths glabrous to densely hispidulous with red prickle-hairs, hyaline to brown or green on upper sheaths, + prominently veined, the apex shallowly concave, pubescent and slightly thickened; ligules 2-7 mm long, obtuse to rounded, the free portion purple-tinged.
